Before the Questions
Phillip grew up in a nonreligious household. His family had a Latter-day Saint heritage, but it was history rather than practice — something in the background of the family story rather than a part of daily life.
Faith was not rejected in his home so much as unexamined. He entered adulthood with no religious framework and no particular sense that one was missing.
The Search for Something More
He trained as an orthopedic surgeon and built a demanding career. He married, raised a family, made a home, and reached a level of professional and financial security that matched the goals he had set for himself as a young man.
By the measures he had chosen, the list was complete. What surprised him was that completing it did not produce the fulfillment he had expected. The question that followed was not dramatic; it was persistent.
The Investigation
Encouraged by his wife, he began studying the Bible — not devotionally at first, but the way a physician reads evidence: carefully, skeptically, and with attention to what is actually claimed.
That study led him to look at his own family’s Latter-day Saint heritage, and eventually to read the Book of Mormon. He found that he had held opinions about a tradition he had never actually examined.
A Changed Understanding

The Author Today
Now retired from surgery, Phillip writes from Texas. His first book, We Believe, grew directly out of that investigation, and a second book, We Choose Christ, is forthcoming.
He continues to publish essays and reflections, and speaks occasionally at community and church gatherings about questions of faith, scripture, and meaning.
